Background of the Study

Good hygiene practices are essential for preventing infectious diseases such as diarrhea, respiratory infections, and skin conditions, particularly among school-aged children (WHO, 2024). Poor hygiene in schools can lead to high absenteeism, reduced academic performance, and increased disease transmission (Adebayo & Salami, 2024). Hygiene education aims to equip children with knowledge on handwashing, sanitation, and personal cleanliness, thereby reducing health risks (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).

In Benue State, several hygiene education initiatives have been introduced in schools to promote better health outcomes. However, the extent to which these programs have improved hygiene behavior and reduced disease prevalence remains unverified. This study investigates the impact of hygiene education on school children's health in Benue State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite ongoing hygiene education campaigns, many schoolchildren in Benue State still suffer from preventable diseases linked to poor hygiene. Limited access to clean water, inadequate sanitation facilities, and gaps in health education contribute to persistent health issues (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024).

This study examines the effectiveness of hygiene education programs in schools, assessing their role in promoting better hygiene practices and reducing health problems among children.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of hygiene awareness among school children in Benue State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of hygiene education programs on children's health outcomes.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the effectiveness of hygiene education in schools.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of hygiene awareness among school children in Benue State?
  2. How do hygiene education programs influence school children's health?
  3. What are the challenges affecting the implementation of hygiene education programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Hygiene education programs have no significant impact on children's health.
  2. There is no significant relationship between hygiene awareness and disease prevention.
  3. Barriers to hygiene education do not significantly affect program outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on primary school students in Benue State, evaluating the effectiveness of hygiene education programs. Limitations include variations in school infrastructure and availability of clean water and sanitation facilities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Hygiene Education: Instruction on proper sanitation and cleanliness practices to prevent disease.
  • Sanitation Facilities: Infrastructure such as toilets and clean water sources that support hygiene.
  • Disease Prevention: Measures taken to reduce the risk of infections and illnesses.
